VANOVERLOOP REACHES 100 POINTS; BECOMES 8TH PLAYER
Sitting back in the shadows following a career game by
another fellow teammate, the Phantoms Tim Vanoverloop
was able to quietly reach a milestone that very few Phantom
players have been able to amass. On Sunday, January 15th,
Tim Vanoverloop became just the eighth player in Phantom
team history to record his 100th Point as a member of the
nearly 10 year-established West Michigan Phantoms. The
record-making tally would occur late in the opening period
at Walker Ice & Fitness, as the Phantoms Keith Moorman would drop the puck back
to Vanoverloop on the blue-line, who would pass the puck on to Trent Kik who would
bury the puck past the Pioneer goaltender for a 2-0 Phantom lead. Tim
Vanoverloops assist on the Kik goal would mark his 68th career assist for the
Phantoms and combine that with his 32 goals, would complete the benchwork for
his 100th Phantom point. Tim has been a member of the Phantoms since March
2008 when the team kicked off play in the Bronze league at Cedar Rock Sports
Plex. This nearly four year member as been apart of the Phantom franchise at
Rivertown Sports, Cedar Rock Sports Plex and has also spent the past two
seasons at Walker Ice & Fitness as a member of the newly established Phantom Ice
team. Tims commitment and strong defensive skill has been a key for the
Phantoms for the past four years and has helped the team capture two
championships in the Bronze league at Cedar Rock during that span. Tim is the
most dependable defenseman I have played with, said longtime Phantom teammate
Trent Kik. He plays an all around sound game and its great to see him back there
when Im on the ice, added Kik. Tim joins the ranks of Gordie Anderson, Chris
Benedict, Tim Czycyk, Trent Kik, Casey Rosenberg, Jason Schemmel and Brad
Zehr as the only other members of the Phantoms to record 100 points in their
Phantom career. Despite having played only four years with the Phantoms, his roots
with the team go further back. Phantom netminder Kevin Wootton has been playing
behind Tim for nearly six years and has played with Tim on numerous teams
throughout the Rivertown Sports and Cedar Rock venues including the very
successful Team America. Tim is the perfect guy to have playing in front of you as
his ability to defend the defensive zone by shutting down opposing forwards makes
a goaltenders job much easier, said Wootton. He is a reliable player who I can
always count on to be in position to make the play and is a teammate who is able to
remain calm and collected both on the ice and in the locker room during any
occasion, Wootton said. Many players on the defensive side of sports tend to get
over looked by the scorers and fighters of a team, however, any teams success
begins with the defense and Tim Vanoverloop is one of those quite-steady
work-horses that a team needs to be successful and it is an honor to have Tim as a
member of the Phantoms, Wootton added. Player stats during the course of the
nearly Ten-Year Phantom history have only been kept for games played at Cedar
Rock and Walker Ice & Fitness. Rivertown Sports did/does not keep individual
stats for its adult leagues.
KIK BECOMES SECOND ON TEAM WITH 100 ASSISTS, FIRST IN PIM'S
In a season that has allowed several Phantom players to
reach milestones, another major accomplishment was
recorded on Sunday during the team’s 5-4 victory over the
Deke Squad. Five-year-Phantom forward Trent Kik was
able to etch his name into two separate categories for the
West Michigan Phantoms. First and most importantly, the
Sparta native has become only the second player in the
nearly 10-year history of the Phantoms to capture 100

assists. The century-eclipsing helper was recorded during the third period at Walker
Ice & Fitness when Trent Kik assisted (along with Gordie Anderson) on a Matt Zehr
goal 3:41 into the final frame to even the duel at 3-3. The milestone reached by
Trent Kik could not have been written any better, as all three members of the
Phantom’s ‘Meat-Lovers-Line’ would tally a point in the historic accomplishment.
Trent Kik not only became just the second player to record 100 assists in a Phantom
jersey, but also became the first person to reach 200 penalty minutes in team history
during that January 22nd clash at Walker. Kik would record three separate minors
during the game against Deke Squad (two of which are believed to be a case of
mistaken identity) to climb into the double-century-category with his 200th, 201st and
202nd penalty minute of his Phantom career. While the exact number of games that
Trent Kik has played in while in a Phantom jersey is uncertain, it is believed to be
around 242 games. With so many (Phantom) games under his belt, it is no wonder
why Trent has been able to reach the triple digits in goals scored, assists and
penalty minutes. “Trent is a player who gives his all when he is on the rink as he
brings so much energy, heart and passion with each shift,” said team goaltender
Kevin Wootton. “From joining the team in 2006 and playing with so many players
over the past five years, Trent has grown from a teenager into a vital role as Co-
Captain and Ambassador of the Phantoms,” Wootton said. Throughout the
seasons, Kik has been a part of Phantom Hockey during the team’s Brass-league-
play at Rivertown Sports starting in 2006, Bronze and Silver action at Cedar Rock
Sports Plex, Sunday-Night Ice league at Walker Ice & Fitness and has been called
in numerous times at Rivertown and Cedar Rock to act as a sub for other leagues in
which the Phantoms have been involved in. “I knew Trent was capable of reaching
both of these milestones the first time I met him,” said the Phantoms Chris
Benedict. “He is a skilled power forward with great hands (reminds me of myself)
and is an unselfish player,” Benedict added. “As a power forward he won't put up
with any shit either, obviously. 200 PIM's is a record that will probably not last long
knowing the history of the Phantoms, but good on ya kid,” closed Benedict. Trent
Kik is expected to be in the lineup on Sunday, January 29th when the Phantoms take
on West Michigan Precision Machining at Walker Ice & Fitness. It is worthy to note
that statistics are only kept for Phantom games played at Cedar Rock Sports and
Walker Ice & Fitness, as Rivertown Sports does not keep track of player statistics.
The Phantoms would like to congratulate Trent Kik on both of his recent milestones.

PHANTOMS RETURN AFTER SUPER BOWL BREAK; FACE AFI
Following a week off for the SuperBowl, the Phantoms will return to action on
Sunday, February 12th to tangle with Auto Fix It (AFI) at 10:40pm. This contest will
mark the second of three regular season meetings against AFI this season. Back
on October 23rd, the Phantoms were routed by AFI to the turn of a 12-3 defeat.
Entering Sunday's clash, AFI enters tied for second place in the division with a
10-3-0 mark. In their 13 games played, AFI enters tied as the highest scoring
team in the 10-team circuit with 91 goals scored. On the defensive side, AFI
enters as the 5th best defensive team with 50 goals scored against the
black-shirts. As for the Phantoms, they enter Sunday's duel in sole control of fourth
place with an 8-3-2 record. The yellow shirts enter as the sixth highest scoring
team in the division with 61 goals scored in their 13 games played. The Phantom
defense is ranked third, tied with Deke Squad for the fewest goals against with 47.
AFI is the second-least penalized team in the division, where as the Phantoms
(who are known for their sin-bin journeys) are the fifth most penalized team in the
league. The Phantoms enter Sunday's game having earned at least a point in
each of their last five calls to action at Walker Ice & Fitness. These two teams will
square off again during the final regular season meeting of the season, scheduled
for April 1st.

SCHEMMEL RETURNS TO NET GOAL IN 5-2 WIN OVER WMPM
The West Michigan Phantoms were able to capture another victory on Sunday and
increase their feat of earning at least a point in each of the teams last five games,
as the Phantoms defeated West Michigan Precision Machining (WMPM) by the
final of 5-2 to enter the Super Bowl break. The victory marks the second victory of
the season against WMPM for the Phantoms, who were able to increase their
overall record to 8-3-2. The match-up was also the final regular season meeting
against WMPM this season. The Phantoms would open the scoring just under six
minutes to the game, as Nate Skoboda would tally his fifth of the season
(unassisted) to lift the Phantoms into a 1-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, the
Phantom lead would expand to 2-0 as Brad Zehr would net his third of the season
(unassisted) to climb to within two goals of his brother Matt Zehr in the brotherly
goal scoring race. In the second, Skoboda would notch his second of the game
with 6:39 remaining in the middle frame to grow the Phantom lead to 3-0. In the
third period, Matt Mead would strike with his seventh goal of the season (assisted
by Brad Zehr) to lift the Phantoms into a commanding 4-0 lead. Exactly eight
seconds later, Jason Schemmel would net his third of the season to complete the
Phantom offensive drive at 5-0. Despite having numerous opportunities during the
game, WMPM would finally ruin the shut-out bid for the Phantoms late in the third
period, as a defensive collapse by the Phantoms would yield a break-away from
center ice and WMPM would strike with their first goal against the Phantoms in
nearly two outings. Three minutes later while exerting pressure, WMPM would
take four attempts in front of the night before luck would bounce their way and
another puck would slip past the Phantom netminder to close the game's offense.
The Phantoms would skate away with a 5-2 victory and two important points in the
standings, which followed by a Agape loss, would push the Phantoms into sole
control of fourth place in the 10-team league. The game marked the first game for
Jason Schemmel in a while, as Schemmel missed the previous three games due
to work scheduling issues. The Phantoms played three guys short for the first time
of the season, as Matt Zehr, Gene Smith, Sean Wert, Gordie Anderson and Casey
Rosenberg were all scratched from the game. Both teams were ticketed on a
single minor during the game for two minutes each. The Phantoms will return to
action on Sunday, February 12th at 10:40 to battle Auto Fix It.
