DYNASTY ACHIEVED: 'BOYS NET THIRD STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP IN 4-3 WIN
Very few teams are able to capture
Back-2-Back championships due to the
difficultly of the added target pointed at them
when they do go after their second.  The
thought or idea of any team being able to
capture three straight championships is
something that rarely comes up. On
Saturday, October 17th the Good Ole Boys
were able to capture their third straight
league championship and join the very elite
list of teams that have won three straight
championships at Rivertown Sports.  While
Rivertown records were removed from their
website nearly two years ago, it is believed
that only Howie's Hockey Tape has won

three straight league championships at the Grandville rink.  On Saturday, the Good
Ole Boys opened their fourth season of play-off hockey in four seasons as the
number one seed and took on the Sawbones.  During the regular season finale three
days prior, the Good Ole Boys suffered an overtime loss to the Sawbones and this
play-off game was not only one that had the Good Ole Boys seeking an
advancement to the championship game but one that also seeked revenge against
that overtime loss in the regular season finale. With only five skaters for the
short-handed Sawbones team, the Good Ole Boys made short work of their
opponents, scoring seven goals en route to a 7-1 victory.  Matt Zehr netted three
goals against his former Cedar Rock opponent, while Matt Clark netted two goals
and Kurt Boeske and Nate Tyler each tallied a single red-lighter.  The victory
advanced the Good Ole Boys to the championship game for the fourth time in four
seasons of hockey.  During the other Aluminum leagued semi-final game, Blades of
Steel was able to rally against the Storm and clinch a 5-2 verdict to advance them to
the Aluminum league championship.  It was only fitting that the top two teams, who
split the regular season meetings, would collide one last time for the league
championship.  On August 26th, Blades of Steel edged the Good Ole Boys 5-4 and
on September 13th, the 'Boys earned a 4-2 win to even the series.

In the championship game, the Good Ole Boys would open the scoring in the first
period, as seven-year-forward and team general manager Kurt Boeske would knock
home a rebound off a Brain Bonzheim Bazooka Blast from just inside the left circle to
give the 'Boys a 1-0 lead. Late in the opening period, Blades of Steel would even the
duel as a Steel forward was able to penetrate the 'Boys defense and remain
stationed just to the right of the goal mouth.  A shot from the left circle would be
denied by the 'Boys goaltender, but a rebound to the right side of the goal mouth
would find the wide-open Steel forward who just buried the puck past Wootton to
dead-lock the duel at 1-1.  Early in the second period, the Two-Time defending
league champions would again climb back into the lead, as first-season defenseman
Nate Tyler would launch a legendary Phantom-Howitzer to the back of the Blades of
Steel net to march the red-shirts into a 2-1 lead.  Minutes later, Blades of Steel would
climb right back and tie the game, as former Good Ole Boy Brad Zehr would be left
alone at the left edge of the goal and the now Rivertown forward would receive a
perfect pass through the goal crease and riffle the biscuit past Wootton for a 2-2
game.  Just as the scoreboard remained tied after the first period, the scoreboard
was tied after two periods of hockey.  In the third period, both teams were looking for
the offense needed to put this game away.  Mid-way into the third period, Blades of
Steel would tally a goal to climb ahead for the first time in the contest, as a speedy
forward would excel along their left wing and beat Wootton short-side for a 3-2
Blades of Steel lead.  With time becoming a huge issue for the Good Ole Boys, the
team decided to use its single time-out to rest the troops for the finish.  With under
two minutes remaining in regulation, the 'Boys had a glorious game-tying chance
taken away by the heroic actions of the Blades of Steel goaltender.  An all-out
assault on the goal would find the Good Ole Boy's Nate Tyler ping the crossbar with
the puck and despite six skaters in the goal mouth and the Blades of Steel
goaltender scrambling along with his defense parters, the puck would not cross the
goal line and the Blades of the Steel would remain nursing a single goal lead.  On
the ensuing face-off deep inside the Blades of Steel zone, the practice test by the
Good Ole Boys on the earlier assault would pay off, as Nate Tyler from the right
corner would put the puck on net and this time the 'Boys would be able to win the
scramble as seven-year-forward and team assistant general manager Joe Weiland
would find the loose puck and tie the game at 3-3 with just      1:15 remaining in
regulation.  The defending champions were able to achieve the equalizer late in the
game, but they weren't done yet.  On the ensuing face-off which was won by the
Good Ole Boy's Brain Bonzheim, the 'Boys were able to control to settle the play
down.  Brain Bonzheim from inside the neutral zone would dish the puck to Kurt
Boeske who would charge into the Blades of Steel zone on a 1-on-1.  Despite having
former team-mate Brad Zehr on Boeske's heels, Boeske would shoot the puck
through the legs of Blades of Steel defenseman Mike DeVore and just under the
right pad of the Steel netminder to put the 'Boys into the lead with just 44 seconds
remaining.  Two Good Ole Boy goals in the span of 31 seconds brought the large
crowd and bench to its feet as the stunning change of events in the final minutes was
nothing short of a miracle.  Following the second Boeske strike of the game, Blades
of Steel forward Brad Zehr would send his stick hard into the side of the net in utter
disbelief and that action by him would send him to the penalty box on an
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.  Despite lifting the goaltender for the extra
attacker, the Good Ole Boys would fend off the final 44 seconds and leap over the
boards to celebrate their third franchise championship in three seasons.  The late
4-3 comeback rally by the 'Boys would yield much celebration by the red shirts and
clinch another celebration on Wolf Run.  The victory gives the Good Ole Boys an
impressive 9-2-0-1 mark on the season.  Kurt Boeske would be named the game's
MVP, as the East Kentwood grad would net two goals including the game winner with
44 seconds remaining to give the 'Boys the championship.  The team played without
the services of Nate Skoboda (ice hockey), Greg Foster (injury) and KJ Klaassen
(work) during the entire play-off run.  Greg Foster and Mike Shaver played important
roles behind the bench coaching the Good Ole Boys to the win.  The team would like
to say thanks to everyone in the stands for coming to watch the game, as it was nice
to win a championship in front of so many people who are involved in the lives of the
team.  Also, Thank You to Main Street Pub-Wyoming for again supporting our team.
Amy, Brian and Brooke, you guys are the best and thanks again for your support.
