The Phantoms continue to follow in the team's rich
history of presenting the championship trophy to the
player who has worn the yellow sweater the longest.
For the Winter 2006 Silver Championship, Matt
Zehr was next-in-line to take home a piece of
Phantom history. Matt has been apart of Phantom
Hockey for 17 of the team's 18 seasons. It's a
home-coming present to Matt, since he returned to
the team this season after taking last season off to rest from an on-going
leg injury. Matt has been a very important piece to the Phantom puzzle and
he is indeed very deserving of this honor. While the actual trophy given to
the Phantoms for the Championship Photo will remain in a brand new
trophy case at Lazerskate Sports Plex with the team name engraved on a
plaque, Matt will be given a trophy from Lazerskate in which he will be able
to call his own. On behalf of the rest of your Phantom team-mates,
Congratulations Matt on a very deserving and accomplishment.
In the Phantoms Inaugural Season at Lazerskate, the team excelled to a 13-1 overall record and defeated the team's arch-rival Rouge River for the Championship. The Championship is the team's third. Great Job Guys and Fans!

Winter 2006 Championship Roster
The Phantoms closed out a Cinderella Style season
on Sunday, February 11, 2007 as the West Michigan
Phantoms captured the team's third championship in
the Franchise's 18th season. The Yellow Shirts
battled back from two seperate difictes to knock-off
the defending champion Rouge River 7-6 to take over
the championship title. The game would be a very
high-scoring competition between two of the highest
scoring teams at Lazerskate during the regular
season and then into the play-offs. The Phantoms

would open the scoring just minutes into the game, yet Rouge River would
not be denied as the Rivermen would seize a first period lead after the
first 16 minutes at 3-2. During the second stanza, the Phantoms would
begin to battle back as the Yellow Shirts would erupt with two second
period goals to erase the deficit and tie the game at 5-5 after 32 minutes.
The final period would be a test for every player on the rink. Not only
would the players be tested on their hockey skills, but also on self-control.
Tension between Rouge River and the Phantoms had been mounting for
nearly two games. During the third period, a physical brand of hockey
would be played out. Rogue River would capture the first third period goal
to climb back into the lead at 6-5. The Phantoms would answer right back
to seal it at 6-6. With time running down on the clock, Rouge River would
be ticketed with a minor penalty. That would create a Phantom
Power-Play and with 1:49 remaining in a game a face-off deep inside
Rouge River territory. Casey Rosenburg won the draw and sent it back to
Nate Tyler who Radiated a Rocket from the Right Wing and with a screen
in place from Gordie Anderson, the Rouge River netminder would not
have a chance as the Phantoms seized a 7-6 lead. With time running out,
Rouge River would turn to desperation. Nate Terveen, Rouge River's
highest penalized player during the regular season, would attempt to take
out the Phantom's Trent Kik deep inside the Rouge River zone. That
attempted knock-out would land no where as the Phantom Offensemen
returned to the neutral zone to help protect and preserve the single goal
lead. Rouge River would experience difficultly in capturing control of the
puck, as the Phantom crew detoured several attempted Rogue River
passes back deep into enemy territory. With Dylan Lambert in full flight
towards the Rouge River bench, time was running out on the Rivermen.
The Phantom Neutral Zone shield was in full force and Rouge could not
break through. The Phantom's Matt Zehr would send another puck the
length of the rink, yet Nate Terveen would continue on his all-out
head-hunting excursion and Matt would be completely overtaken from
behind and crumpled into a hemp just outside the Phantom Blueline. The
classless and immoral actions from Nate Terveen all night long would
continue as he landed nearly seven punches at the back of Matt Zehr's
head as Matt lay face-down on the rink until Brian Doctor came to the aid
of his fellow teammate. Both the Phantom and Rouge River benches
cleared and this all out melee with only 7.2 seconds remaining on the
clock would continue for over a minute as both teams became embedded
in a mission to protect their own teammates. Casey Rosenberg would
become in-grossed with another Rouge River player nearly six feet away
as those two unleashed an arsenal of blows. This all-out neutral-zone
dance would be a very disappointing end to a championship game that
was billed to be the best of the night. Once order was restored, it was
decided by the officials that the game would be called and that the
Phantoms with a 7-6 lead would be crowded the new Silver Division
Champions at Lazerskate Sports Plex.

After 17 seasons at Rivertown Sports in Grandville, the Phantoms began
to show frustration and that frustration was starting to see longtime
Phantom players refuse to return to the Rivertown. During October 2006,
just three weeks before the Lazerskate season was set to begin, the
Phantoms took a bold move and announced that the team would not
return to Rivertown Sports for the team's 18th season. With only a few
players on board, the Phantoms announced that the team was moving
forward with plans to bring a team to Lazerskate Sportsplex in Cedar
Springs, an idea that was first developed in the Winter of 2005. Within a
matter of nearly a week, several former Phantoms as well as new comers
Ty Coon and Andy Roseart agreed to embark on the new Phantom team.
On October 15th the Phantom kicked off their northern run, yet fell victim
to Rogue River 4-3.
Once the Phantom Troop completed their first game at Lazerskate, very
high marks were received. Players really enjoyed the arena and the
atmosphere. The players sensed that this rejuvenated group of former
Phantoms and new players had the skill and desire to compete. The life
and blood of the Phantom team was back, something that has struggled
for nearly the final year at Rivertown Sports.
Following the opening night loss, the Phantoms began to crank up their
play and completed the following 9 games without a loss. The team
managed to sail into the post-season with an excellent 9-1 record,
overcoming everyone's expectations. During the post-season the Yellow
and Black continued to take aim at the league, achieving another three
wins to advance to the championship game against the team that
handed the Phantoms their only Lazerskate loss on the books. During
the championship game, both of Lazerskate's two highest scoring
machines (Rouge River and the Phantoms) put on a show that was much
to the liking of the nearly 30 people in the stands. In the end, the
Phantoms scored with 1:43 remaining in the game to capture the
championship and end a very successful inaugural season at
Lazerskate.
It wasn't the fact that the team won the championship that made this
season a success, but rather the fact that everyone had fun during the
entire season. The Phantoms worked on bringing former players back
into the mix and worked on restoring the idea of fun hockey to the team.
The way that this team connected and played hockey together was only
second to the fact that everyone had fun. Of the three championships, I
would have to say that this one will go down as the best and most
memorable.
'We Are The Phantoms' is the motto the team shares. It stands to show
that each member of the team is a critical part to the teams success.
Few teams are able to stay intact for 18 seasons with only minor roster
changes, it is rewarding to know that this team is one of those rare
occasions. Thanks everyone for a very fun, excitement and memorable
season. Phantom Hockey...We Are The Phantoms.
