It was just under three years ago when the Phantoms
last tasted the sweet taste of a championship.  On
Saturday, that taste was tasted again as the Phantoms
captured their second franchise trophy in a complete
Phantom assault on the Brass play-offs.  The team
would manage to hand the Black Dragons a shut-out of
their own during the opening game, as Brian Doctor
When the Championship Trophy was presented to
the Phantoms on behalf of Rivertown Sports, the
Phantoms all gathered around the net for the
tradition of the championship picture.  After the
picture was taken and all the players gathered their
equipment and headed into the locker room, it was
time to decided which member would take home
the most recent Phantom hardware.  After the
would rocket two goals from the blue line into the back of the Dragon net
and Andrew Erickson would notch another enroute to a 3-0 win.  During
the championship game, Matt Myers would score on a penalty shot and
Brian Doctor, Brad Zehr and Andrew Erickson would each tally a singleton
as the Phantoms seek and reap the post-season sweep with a 4-0 win
against the Dekleine Builders.  The Phantom defense and netminder
would absolutely astounding, as the Phantoms surrendered zero goals
during the post-season run.  During both the games, the Phantom penalty
kill would kill off a full 4-2 power play by the adversaries.  The Phantoms
become only the fifth team in the history of Rivertown Sports to not
surrender a goal in the post-season.  Ironically, the 2003 Summer
Championship was captured with a 4-0 shut-out victory against the Vipers.
The Phantoms complete the entire Spring 2006 season with a terrific
10-1-0-1 record.  Great Job Guys...We Are now the Defending Champs!
first championship back in 2003, it was decided that future trophies would
be given to the veteran member that has played the most in a Phantom
uniform and has yet to add a Phantom Championship Trophy to his
collection.  In the locker room after the game, a simple coin toss took place
to decide which member would take it home.  With Matt Zehr and Nate
Tyler the two oldest players on the roster, it was between them.  Nate Tyler
picked 'heads' and 'heads' it was.  Congrats Nate.  During the next
Phantom championship, Matt Zehr will receive the trophy.  Both Nate and
Matt have been apart of Phantom Hockey since 2002 and played in all 15
seasons of hockey.  Phantom Hockey...Championship Style!
As the kick-off to the Summer 2006 season is just
around the corner, lets take one last look back at a
very successful 2006 Spring Season.  The
Phantoms returned to an all-Friday schedule for the
first time nearly 3 years and brought back several
past players including Brian Doctor, Kevin
Groothuis and added new players such as Jason
Schemmel and Andrew Erickson to enhance this already high-caliber
roster.  Former players Art Dorsey, Mike Shaver and Matt Myers continued
to add yet another solid core of both offense and defense to the Phantom
empire.  Veteran players Matt Zehr, Nate Tyler, Brad Zehr and Kevin
Wootton also returned as the Phantoms were set for a fun season of
hockey and one that featured a very large arsenal of
firepower.  One reason for the decision to drop to Brass,
was to allow the Phantoms the ability to compete.
Several seasons at the Copper level reduced the
excitement to play and many were not eager to play.
This Brass team was going to take the road of having
fun and enjoying hanging out at the rink with friends.
As the season began, the Phantoms were ready and during the first game
when the team defeated its arch-rivals the Vipers by the final of 15-4, the
team knew they were in for fun.  During the second game, the Phantoms
defeated the defending champion Black Dragons by the final of 5-2.  This
victory was huge, as it marked the 100th Franchise
Victory for the Phantoms, a goal that the Phantoms
created nearly two seasons earlier.  As the rest of the
season continued, the Phantoms continued to win and
have fun.  In the end, the team posted a 8-1-0-1 record
during the regular season.  Their only loss in regulation
was inflected by the Black Dragons by the final of 4-0.
Yet, in the locker room after the game everyone was still
loose and in good spirits.  That loss just brought out the
rest of the desire and motivation for this Phantom team.  During the final
game of the regular season, the Phantoms creamed Affirmative Action
10-2.  That desire continued during the post-season, as a 3-0 win against
the Black Dragons and 4-0 win over DeKleine Builders sealed the
championship for the Phantoms.  This team stepped up their game after
their regular season loss and that increase brought with it the best puck
control and best playing team many have seen and/or
been apart of in awhile.  The Phantoms finished the
entire season with a terrific 10-1-0-1 record.  It is
great to know that this team, many of which was
either new or hadn't seen hockey action in some
time, came together, played well, had fun and won a championship.
Thanks Players for a Great Season!
