GROOTHUIS NETS GWG TO SECURE 3-1 PHANTOM VICTORY

In only his third Phantom game of the season, Kevin Groothuis netted what would
eventually become the game winning strike on Sunday night to lift the Phantoms to their
fifth straight victory. The opening period strike by Groothuis would not only mark his first
point of the season, but his first point since his first stint with the team back in 2003. The
Phantom goal by the Twin Lake resident would be the game winner, as the yellow shirts
edged Roman Empire by the final of 3-1. The Phantom's would apply pressure hot and
heavy right from the opening face-off, as the yellow shirts would open the scoring just 2:18
into the contest. Tim Vanoverloop's early first period goal would be his first of the season,
as the former Stick Head defenseman would capture the unassisted tally to catapult the
Phantoms into an early 1-0 lead. Minutes later, the Men of Phantom Nation would keep
their flare going, as Kevin Groothuis would stage his first goal of the campaign with 8:01
remaining in the opening period to increase the Phantom lead to 2-0. The Phantom's two
goal grip would be erased 1:30 later, as a Roman Empire stuff attempt from the right
corner would find traffic in front and the puck would slip in past the Phantom goalkeeper to
narrow the Phantom lead to 2-1. The Phantoms, with their 10-skater arsenal primed and
pumping, would not be able to cash in on another red-lighter until the 6:11 mark of the
second period. Trent Kik would climb one inch closer to his quest of 100, as the Sparta
native would tally Phantom-Cedar Rock career goal 99 off a Tim Vanoverloop set-up to
regain the Phantom two-goal grip at 3-1. Despite numerous Phantom point-blank
chances, Roman Empire's netminder Jeff Pacific would keep the white shirts in contention
into the third period. Despite the Empire's defensive success, their offensive support
would be a little suspect, as they would not be able to penetrate a very strong and healthy
Phantom defensive core. Late in the third period with the Roman Empire goaltender lifted
for an extra-attacker, their hope for a motivation building goal would be declined. With the
eyes of the Phantom World on him, Trent Kik would fail to connect on an empty net attempt
with under a minute remaining, as Kik would wrist a shot for the 100-goal mark off the top
crossbar. The countdown now stands at a skat singleton. The 3-1 victory by the
Phantoms increases their overall season record to 6-2. On the game, the Phantoms out
shot Roman Empire 30-20. Both teams failed to capitalize on their two respective
power-play opportunities. The Phantoms will return to the lights of Cedar Rock Sports Plex
on Sunday, March 14th to entertain Team Chowder.
Phantom Hockey...27 Seasons Long, 27 Seasons Strong!

CAPTAIN KIK HAS 99 DOWN...1 TO GO!
With 99 goals scored in a Phantom uniform at Cedar Rock,
Phantom captain Trent Kik is just one goal shy of netting
Phantom-Cedar Rock career goal 100. Kik, who entered the
season six away from the mark, has scored five goals in eight
games this season and despite not lighting the lamp as frequent
as he has in the past, Trent is still on pace to reach that 100 goal
plateau this season. No Phantom player has ever reached that
100 goal level since the team shifted play to Cedar Rock in 2006.
(Phantom stats have only been kept at Cedar Rock, since the
team's previous home Rivertown Sports did not keep stats). Trent has been a member of
the Phantoms since 2006 and has played 12 seasons with the yellow shirts.
PHANTOMS TOP PHANTOMS AT RIVERTOWN SPORTS
Wednesday night saw current and former members of the
Phantoms square off against one another at Rivertown Sports. In
the only meeting against each other during the 10-game regular
season, the Good Ole Boys (minor club of the Phantoms) faced
off against Blue Vortex.net and it was the Good Ole Boys who
stole the show. Behind a very solid goaltending effort by the
Good Ole Boy's Kevin Wootton, the red shirts skated to a 4-2
decision over Blue Vortex. Former Phantom Brad Zehr netted a
singleton for the red shirts. The Good Ole Boys are comprised up
of former and current Phantom's such as Brad Zehr, Matt Zehr, Mike Shaver, Nate Tyler,
Kevin Wootton and previous Phantom subs Kurt Boeske and Joe Weiland. Blue Vortex
featured the likes of current Phantom's Matt Mead, Jason Schemmel and Tim Czycyk.
ROSTER BIO'S COMING
While the information was collected over a month ago, Phantom roster bio's will be added
to the Phantom roster page soon. Rather than having just a photo, basic information will
be added about each player to shed some light on the players that make Phantom hockey
possible. Be sure to check back with the Phantom website in the next week as the
information is added.
WHERE'S JUSTIN BEEN HIDING?
There is no need to send out a search party for Phantom
defensemen Justin Calkins. Since many have asked where our
very own 'wine-guy' has been during the past two games, we
decided to seek out some answers. Apparently, Calkins will be
the Phantom ticket to Hollywood. In Justin's free time, he is a fan
of photography and has been working to secure acting roles in
movies. During the February 28th game against the Puck-Ups,
Justin (working as part of the film production crew), wrapped
production on an upcoming film called "The Christmas Bunny

(2010)" which will be released around this Christmas. Justin was called to work on the film
as the Still Photographer/Unit Photographer just for the production filming of scenes with
the lovely Florence Henderson, which were filmed in 3 different locations in Grand Rapids,
MI. During a three day period, Justin took over 1000 photographs. Florence Henderson
was the Mom on the Brady Bunch and also appeared in several other films and TV shows.
While his desire to be involved in Phantom hockey is important, Justin was again a healthy
scratch on Sunday, March 7th against Roman Empire as he had to take photos for another
event. The "West Michigan’s Oscar Night America" took place at the Urban Institute for
Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids. Justin was again photographing the event.
(Here is a link that talks about it if you want more info on that:
http://www.mlive.com/onthetown/index.ssf/2010/03/waterfront_film_festival_hosts.html)
The role of a Set Photographer/Unit Photographer is to shoot still photos of each scene
being filmed, the actors and crew off camera, candid photos etc. The photos can be used
by the production company for promotional purposes, movie posters, etc. Basically
shooting everything that's going on, on set. It's also to help document the film.
Projects coming to the area that I hope to work on next are: "Jekyll and Hyde" (with Curtis
Jackson (aka 50 Cent); "Real Steel" (with Hugh Jackman); "Salvation Boulevard" (with
Pierce Brosnan, Ed Harris, Jim Gaffigan)
